Typically, the side lying position is used almost exclusively in pre-natal massage, as pregnant mothers can be uncomfortable or unable to be face down or directly face up. But side lying massage is a good option for everyone, pregnant or not. Lying on our side is one of the most intuitive and restful positions we can take. It also allows for angles and approach that massage in both prone (face down) and supine (face up) positions don’t offer.
I offer side lying massage as an alternative to the portion of the massage when you would normally be face down. You will start on one side, and after a time, you’ll rotate to the other side and finish the massage face up.
Side lying massage is also great for those who experience nasal congestion while in the prone position. When you are face down, gravity tends to clog your breathing passages. When your breathing is restricted, it is hard to relax and enjoy the benefits of massage. In the side lying position, you won’t be face down, so gravity won’t be affecting your nasal passages the same way, and you’ll be able to breathe much easier.
